Southside Bellingham
The south side of town
When people in Bellingham say the Southside they mean the part of town south of downtown: South Hill, Happy Valley, the neighborhoods around Western Washington University, and the slope that runs down to the bay. Fairhaven and Edgemoor sit at the far end of it and get their own pages.
South Hill
South Hill is the hillside between downtown and Fairhaven. The streets are steep, the houses are older, and a lot of them look straight out over Bellingham Bay toward the islands. It is one of the first places people ask about when they want a view and want to walk to things.
Happy Valley
On the other side of the hill, Happy Valley is flatter, leafier and more mixed. Older bungalows, newer infill, a good share of rentals because the university is close. It tends to be where people look when South Hill is out of reach and they still want to be on this side of town.
The water
The reason a lot of people want the Southside is Boulevard Park and the boardwalk. The South Bay Trail runs from downtown along the water, out over the bay on the boardwalk, and on to Fairhaven. People commute on it. From Fairhaven the Interurban Trail keeps going south toward Chuckanut.
Buying here
Houses on the Southside are older on average, so inspections matter more than usual. Views are worth real money and are worth checking from the actual windows, in winter, when the leaves are down. Lots are tight and the hills make additions and parking harder than they look. None of that should put you off. It just needs somebody who has been through these houses before.
